MISSION STATEMENT:
To empower northwestern Nevada’s youth to create proactive prevention programming, encouraging their peers to adopt healthy decision making through education and leadership.


 
VISION STATEMENT:
To develop the integration of community partners and youth leaders, working together to implement proactive prevention efforts through community service learning projects, resulting in youth leadership and empowerment. To emphasize collaborative governance; participating youth will work with community leaders to design and implement multi-disciplinary responses to a variety of community health issues including, but not limited to:  childhood obesity, nutrition, body image, physical activity, youth smoking trends, environmental tobacco smoke, sexual health and environmental improvement.  All programs and services will be designed by youth and will be provided to their peers through classroom presentations, local events, and community outreach.   
 

We believe that to improve individual health, protect our communities and eliminate preventable disease it takes everyone doing their part everywhere, everyday.
 

 
Background:
The High Sierra AHEC center believes that prevention is a proactive process of advocacy, education and guidance that promotes the well-being of individuals and society.  It provides a conscious choice to meet the challenges and transformations of life by creating an environment that promotes healthy behaviors and lifestyles.   From individual behavior change to improved community health through awareness and education, Project Prevent advocates will become young educators, creating appealing projects and educating our community on the powerful topic of prevention.  The goals of Project Prevent will be achieved through strategic public health efforts aimed at the following program objectives:

Outcome Objectives
  • Decrease prevalence of preventable health complications
  • Increase healthy decision making
  • Increase volunteer opportunities and impact
  • Increase student involvement, widening civic engagement among northwestern Nevada youth
  • Provide support for efficacy and mattering
  • Increase integration of family, school and community 

 Impact Objectives

  • Participating students will improve at school, improving attendance, becoming more focused and attentive and make better grades.
  • Increase the number, reach and quality of civic engagement activities aimed at improving community health.
  • Increase the number, reach and quality of social and behavioral approaches that complement policy and environmental strategies to promote healthy lifestyles and decision making.
  • Project Prevent will provide a variety of prevention education and awareness to 5,000 people, of all ages, by 2013.
