OUR HISTORY

National AHEC Program
Established by Congress in 1971, the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) program is dedicated to recruiting, training, and retaining a health professions workforce committed to serving underserved populations. AHECs serve as a vital link between academic institutions and local community health needs, adapting national initiatives to address regional healthcare challenges.
Our focus is on fostering strong community-academic partnerships to expose, educate, and train both current and future healthcare professionals. Through innovative programs such as AHEC Scholars, we collaborate with academic institutions, healthcare settings, behavioral health practices, and community organizations. By combining traditional and cutting-edge methods, AHECs develop a diverse workforce skilled in providing culturally appropriate, high-quality, team-based care, particularly in primary care for rural and underserved communities.

Celebrating 50 Years of AHEC
In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the passing of legislation which created the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program, the National AHEC Organization (NAO) presents the History of AHEC: Celebrating our Past, Present, and Future. This video was made possible through sponsorships from the Alaska AHEC, Florida AHEC Network and the NAO. Featuring past, present and future NAO leadership, the video outlines the history of the AHEC Program and highlights the impact of AHECs in our nation’s healthcare workforce development initiatives.
