The 25-26 school year at the University of Nevada, Reno is officially here! The start of a new semester means a new opportunity for undergraduate pre-health students to apply and become AHEC Student Ambassadors!

The AHEC Student Ambassador program is a unique opportunity for UNR healthcare-focused undergraduate students to build their professional skills while making real differences in their communities. By leveraging AHEC partnerships and grants, students gain exclusive access to hand-on experiences, mentorship from industry professionals, and meaningful connections with their peers.

Over summer break, our Student Ambassadors were busy with multiple community outreach opportunities in clinics with the School of Medicine’s Rural Outreach Clinics (ROCs) and with Community Health Alliance (CHA). At the ROCs, our Student Ambassadors were assisting patients as community health workers (CHWs), providing necessary health education to numerous patients and connecting them with needed resources/referrals. At CHA, our Student Ambassadors were closely shadowing multiple departments, building up their understanding of a comprehensive care team and creating impactful professional connections. One of our Student Ambassadors, Yaire A., even managed to secure employment with CHA as a community health worker (CHW) right after her shadowing experience with them.

If this program interests you, or you know someone who might be interested, please contact the Workforce Development Coordinator (Andrew Pham; andrew@highsierraahec.org).
