Financial Sustainability and the Future of Our Mission

Sustaining Our Mission Means Rethinking How We’re Funded
At High Sierra Area Health Education Center (HS AHEC), we talk a lot about building the health workforce, and for good reasons. Our communities need more healthcare professionals, more access, and more opportunities. But there’s a part of this conversation that doesn’t always get talked about openly: how this work is funded, and what that means for our future.
For many years, federal grants have played a critical role in allowing HS AHEC to do what we do. These funds have helped us introduce students to health careers, support training programs, and strengthen workforce pipelines in rural and underserved communities. We are deeply grateful for that support, and it remains an important part of our financial foundation.
At the same time, relying almost entirely on federal funding comes with real limitations Federal grants are competitive, time-limited, and often very specific about how dollars can be used. Funding priorities shift. Timelines change. Budgets tighten. When an organization depends on a single funding source, it becomes harder to plan long-term, harder to innovate, and harder to grow programs beyond the scope of a grant cycle. The reality is this: if HS AHEC continues to rely only on federal funds, we will always be operating within constraints that limit how far and how fast we can expand our impact.
To continue serving students and partners without interruption, we have been actively pursuing a broader mix of funding sources, including foundation grants, local and state partnerships, private contributions, and strategic collaborations. This approach allows us to stabilize programs that might otherwise be impacted by the loss of federal funding and gives us greater flexibility to maintain momentum rather than scale back services.
Workforce development doesn’t work on a one- or two-year timeline. Students don’t move through education and into careers overnight. Communities don’t solve workforce shortages in a single grant cycle. This work requires consistency, flexibility, and the ability to respond to changing needs as they arise.
That’s why we’re focused on building a more sustainable financial future one that allows HS AHEC to be proactive instead of reactive.
Part of that future is investing in better marketing and communications. For nonprofits, marketing isn’t about selling something, it’s about telling our story clearly and consistently. It’s about making sure partners, funders, and community members understand who we are, what we do, and why it matters. When people can see the impact of our work, they’re more likely to invest in it.
Another part of that future is further diversifying how we’re funded. Private philanthropy, healthcare partnerships, fee-for-service training, and community fundraising all play an important role in creating stability. Diversified funding gives us the flexibility to pilot new ideas, expand successful programs, and maintain momentum even when grant cycles end.
Strong financial values are what make this possible. At HS AHEC, we are committed to being thoughtful, transparent, and responsible with every dollar we receive. Financial sustainability isn’t separate from our mission - it’s what allows our mission to grow and reach more people.
When HS AHEC is financially strong, we can better support students from all walks of life, strengthen both urban, rural, and frontier healthcare systems, and respond to the needs of the communities we serve not just today, but for years to come.

How You Can Help Build the Future
If you believe in the future of Nevada communities.
If you believe that students shouldn’t have to leave home to build meaningful careers.
If you believe that access to healthcare should not depend on a zip code.
We invite you to stand with us.
Your support helps HS AHEC move beyond survival and into sustainability. It allows us to invest in new ideas, expand proven programs, and reach students who may never have seen themselves in healthcare without someone opening that door.
Whether it’s through a financial contribution, a partnership, or simply sharing our story, your involvement helps shape the future of healthcare. Every investment, large or small, is an investment in people, opportunity, and healthier communities.
Together, we can ensure that High Sierra AHEC isn’t limited by funding cycles but empowered by shared commitment to keep building the workforce our communities deserve.
