Serving Nevada communities, enhancing healthcare access, promoting health equity, and building connections are some of High Sierra AHECs' leading commitments. Some recent opportunities to follow our commitments have included new training and community engagement.

Self-Paced Nevada Cultural Competency Training

The Nevada Cultural Competency team at High Sierra AHEC is excited to announce a new cultural competency training! This state-approved training provides comprehensive training to foster cultural humility and proactive quality care for patients in Nevada.

This training has CME accreditation!

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine designates this activity for a maximum of 4.00 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.

This training has been developed to be time and cost-effective! As an asynchronous, self-driven training, this course allows participants to satisfy cultural competency training requirements at their own pace. The Nevada Cultural Competency team at High Sierra AHEC is committed to promoting equitable care and leaving a lasting impression on providers.

Nevada Cultural Competency is dedicated to expanding health equity and cultivating a workforce culture centered on humility and respect for marginalized and underserved communities. This training does so by promoting equity, compassion, and inclusivity across sectors by equipping professionals with education and tools for culturally aware practices, ensuring equitable care for Nevadans.

Community Engagement

High Sierra AHEC’s goals of serving Nevada communities expand beyond program development; it reflects a deeper commitment to giving back, which includes supporting local events. Recently, High Sierra AHEC sponsored two build kits for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) program at Reno High School (SWENext). Each build kit covered the cost of custom-sized components and delivery of constructed 3D printed prosthetic hands to individual recipients all over the world. SWENext hosted a Hands of Gratitude build event, during which High Sierra AHEC staff attended and had the opportunity to construct a prosthetic hand from 3D printed parts and fill out a card for our recipient alongside one of the Reno High School SWENext students.

During the build event, ten 3D printed prosthetic hands were constructed by Reno High SWENext students and attendees. Not only was this an opportunity to support our local community, but a broader impact exists through Hands of Gratitude, as ten individuals in need across the globe will receive a 3D printed prosthetic hand.
